We’re all stoned

Dear Charlie,

Of course I meant astonished.

People say this is the hottest January on record. Not on my record, as this photo, taken on January first in Poseidi, may demonstrate. It was torrid. I’m sure the French would disagree. In fact, if France wasn’t so damn big, complex and sophisticated, I’d think that the self-absorbed French were narrow-minded. They’re not. Thinking exclusively about France and French things is more than plenty.

In many ways, Greece and France are alike. Their own supermarkets, phone companies and pastry products. Their own alphabets, dialects, keyboards, strange laws, even stranger ways to bypass them and yet stranger reasons to do so. It’s probably this insanity that makes these countries such strong civilisations.
